Clinical neurophysiology is defined as the study of the central and peripheral nervous system through the recording and analysis of bioelectrical activity, whether spontaneous or stimulated. The American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (acns.org) is the professional association in America dedicated to research and education in this field. I have been a member since 1992.

Electroneurodiagnostics is the applied science of the recording and analysis of electric signals produced by the central and peripheral nervous system. The American Society of Neurodiagnostic Technology (aset.org) is the premier organization for professionals in this field. I have been a member since 1991.

Our History

Clinical neurophysiology began with individuals like Luigi Galvani (1737 - 1798) an Italian physician, physicist, biologist, and philosopher credited with one of the very first discoveries of bioelectricity. Alessandro Volta (1745 - 1827) an Italian physicist, chemist, and a pioneer of electricity and power who is credited as the inventor of the electric battery and contributed to Galvani's research. Later Emil du Bois-Reymond (1818 - 1896), Richard Caton (1842 - 1926), Hans Berger (1873 - 1941), Herbert H. Jasper (1906 - 1999), Frederic A. Gibbs (1903 - 1992), and Albert Grass are just a few who contributed significantly to the scientific body of knowledge in neurophysiology and form the shoulders upon which we stand.

Credentialing

The American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists (abret.org) is the nationally recognized credentialing board for neurophysiology and electroneurodiagnostic technologists in America for over 50 years. ABRET establishes the standard of excellence by which individuals are tested, credentials awarded, and CEU's required to maintain certification. The additional training, specialized skills and social responsibility needed to perform these medical procedures in the clinical, intensive care, and operative environments is evaluated through the credentialing process. Several studies have established the increased value that credentialed providers contribute to the healthcare continuum. I am proud to have earned my first board certification in 1981 and have maintained credentials in multiple specialties to date.
